Battery-Powered Natural Gas Alarm for Homes and Apartments

VIGAS is a battery-powered natural gas alarm designed to detect methane in residential properties. It continuously monitors the surrounding air and activates a powerful audible warning when the concentration of natural gas reaches the alarm threshold.

Designed for homes, apartments and multifamily buildings, VIGAS provides an additional layer of protection for occupants living in properties equipped with natural gas appliances.

Continuous Methane Detection

Methane is the primary component of the natural gas used by stoves, furnaces, boilers and water heaters. A leak may be caused by a damaged connection, a defective appliance, an extinguished flame or improper operation.

VIGAS uses thermoelectric semiconductor MEMS sensor technology to continuously monitor the air for methane. The alarm is designed to activate when the gas concentration reaches 10% of the Lower Explosive Limit, also known as 10% LEL.

When this threshold is reached, VIGAS produces an 85 dB audible alarm at 10 ft (3 m) and activates its LED status indicators. This early warning helps occupants identify a potential natural gas leak and leave the property before the concentration becomes more dangerous.

Natural Gas Alarm vs. Carbon Monoxide Alarm

A natural gas alarm and a carbon monoxide alarm detect two different hazards.

VIGAS detects methane released during a natural gas leak. A carbon monoxide alarm detects carbon monoxide produced by incomplete combustion. A standard carbon monoxide detector does not necessarily detect a methane leak.

A residential natural gas alarm should therefore complement the required smoke alarms and carbon monoxide alarms already installed in the property.

Sealed Battery Designed for a 10-Year Service Life

VIGAS is powered by a sealed, non-replaceable lithium battery designed to operate throughout the alarm’s service life.

Unlike a plug-in natural gas detector, VIGAS does not require a permanent electrical outlet. Its battery-powered design simplifies installation and reduces the risk of the alarm being accidentally unplugged or having its battery removed.

Actual battery life may vary depending on operating conditions, temperature, testing frequency and alarm events. Refer to the VIGAS user manual for complete precautions and limitations.

ETL Listed to UL 1484

ETL Listed to UL 1484

VIGAS is ETL Listed by Intertek to UL 1484, the safety standard covering residential combustible gas alarms.

The UL 1484 standard evaluates essential characteristics such as gas detection performance, audible alarm output, product reliability and operation under different environmental conditions. Additional information about gas alarm testing and certification is available from UL Solutions.
